Counseling Groups
The Elementary School Group has kids from seven to eleven and has generally focused on pro-social skills, attention control, and self-esteem enhancement. The group typically has 5-7 members and meets for 60 minutes on alternate Thursdays at 6:20 p.m. at the Phoenix office.
The Middle School Group is for eleven to fourteen years olds and focused on transitional issues involving school and developmental changes that are important to this age group. Common topics include identity, dealing with peer pressure, school problems, dealing with family conflicts, and decision making. The group typically has six to eight members and meets on alternate Thursdays at 6:20 p.m. at the Phoenix location.

The students in the High School Behavioral Health Group typically include ninth through twelfth graders, but we sometimes include a mature eighth grader. A lot of the focus in this group in on taking responsibility one’s self and accepting our own and others’ limitations. Many of the students are dealing with family conflicts, others are struggling with school and still others are coping with depression, OCD or problems with anxiety. Peer relationships are frequently a topic in the group. Students in this group must commit to being drug-free. The High School Group typically has 8-10 participants and meets for 70 minutes on alternate Tuesdays at 7:20 p.m. at the North Scottsdale office.

The students in the High School Substance Use Recovery Group are typically referred by parents or school officials after concerns have been raised about their use of drugs or alcohol. In the group we talk about the etiology of use, physiological & psychological implications of use, and strategies for coping with the impulses to use illicit substances. While most participants are in high school, some middle-schoolers may be appropriate. Regular drug testing is initially required and students who are not successful in dealing with their addictive issues are referred to an Intensive Outpatient Program, like the Adolescent Substance Abuse Program (ASAP). The group usually has 8-10 participants and meets for 70 minutes on alternative Tuesdays at 7:20 p.m. at the North Scottsdale location.
The Young Adult Substance Use Recovery Group is devoted to providing the skills and mindset that will move clients toward rewarding relationships, careers, and lifestyles. Most group members are in the 20’s and 30’s and have completed primary addictions treatment either in an intensive outpatient or residential program. The group meets for 60 minutes on alternative Thursdays at 7:20 p.m. at the Phoenix Office. Most clients are also involved in concurrent individual or family counseling.
